Small companies in the UK are "probably wasting" around £1.3 billion a year on energy costs, according to an expert.
Delvin Lane, head of client engagement for the Carbon Trust, stated that growing firms are as affected by the issue as larger companies, despite many people thinking that it is mainly a concern for the latter.
He went on to explain that as some smaller businesses are "fighting for survival", the cost savings from being more efficient may be particularly beneficial to them.
"I think most people thought the economic pressures we're currently facing would take this away from the agenda, but actually it's moving it up the agenda because it's a manageable opportunity," he added.
"People can actually do something about it."
Established in 2001, the Carbon Trust was established as an independent company by the government.
The organisation was created to help the UK form a low-carbon economy and provide businesses with information on how they can improve their green credentials.
